The best laid plans; I fully intended to put up more this week. But then you realize you forgot to actually go to the grocery store and some friends come back into town and others have birthdays and suddenly its Saturday night and you haven’t done anything you intended to that week. But I did manage to get you a cocktail, because there is always time for a good cocktail. And this one is one of my favorites; whether you’re stuck in a blizzard back east or watching the surf in California you can never go wrong with bourbon.
Makes two drinks
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup sugar
- 6 fresh sage leaves + more for garnish
- 2 ounces bourbon
- 2 ounces Applejack
- 2 ounce apple cider
- 1 ounce lemon juice
- Angostura bitters
First make the simple syrup by combing the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium low heat. Once the sugar has totally dissolved add the sage leaves and let the mixture simmer together for about 15 minutes. Remove the sage leaves, pour the mixture into a container and allow to cool to room temperature before mixing into the drink.
To make the drink combine the bourbon, applejack, apple cider, lemon juice, sage simple syrup, and a few dashes of Angostura bitters in a shaker filled with ice. Shake to combine and strain into martini or coupe glasses. Garnish with a sage leave and enjoy!
