Those last two gin drinks that I was mildly obsessed with were really just a fling; bourbon is my real love. Gin is refreshing and all but it cannot compare to the rich, warm flavors of good bourbon. This drink to me is the best of both worlds; it has that smoky richness of the bourbon with the bright acidity of the lemon. The maple adds a really nice roundness without making it too sweet and then that little hit of cayenne at the end that provides a nice little burn to the finish. I know there are still quite a few people out there who don’t like bourbon, a concept that is still rather difficult for me to wrap my head around, but little by little I am converting everyone I know into bourbon lovers. I plan on making fetch happen and it starts with you giving this drink a chance.
Makes 2 cocktails
- 3 ounces bourbon
- 3 ounces lemon juice
- 1 ounce maple syrup (the real stuff, not the one that comes in a bottle shaped like a woman)
- cayenne pepper
In a shaker filled with ice combine the bourbon, lemon juice, maple syrup and a dash of cayenne pepper. Shake to combine and strain into tumbler glasses filled with ice. Finish with a pinch of cayenne pepper on top.
